There has never been a better time to become a racehorse owner in Singapore. With increases in prizemoney, attractive training rebates and world-class race tracks and facilities, Singapore is arguably the best and most cost-effective racing centre in the world for successful horse ownership.

Races are held in Singapore all year round with races scheduled on either weekday evenings or weekend afternoons. With more than 700 races scheduled per year there are many opportunities for horses of all classes to compete for more than S$ 58 million worth of prizemoney. On top of the normal races, Singapore has 26 feature races each year, including the S$ 3 million Singapore Airlines International Cup, the jewel of the Singapore racing calendar. The Reward Incentive Scheme helps horse owners to lower the cost of keeping their horses in Singapore.

While the majority of owners reside in Singapore, there are also some registered overseas owners, as the Turf Club encourages both local and international ownership. Apart from enjoying obvious benefits such as prizemoney and rebates, international owners can watch race replays via the Turf Club website. Wherever you are from, owning a horse in Singapore gives you the privilege of enjoying the magnificent facilities at Kranji.

REWARD Incentive Scheme

Under the scheme, an incentive will be paid to Owner of a Singapore-based horse in the form of a "credit rebate" of $900 per horse (WEF 1 April 2009), when his horse meets the qualifying criteria. The "credit rebate" amount due to the Owner will be used to offset against his horse's monthly training bill and the Owner will only be billed the balance. This scheme is to help lower the cost of keeping horses in Singapore.

Getting Started

To race horses in Singapore, all owners must be registered with the Malayan Racing Association (MRA). The MRA is the controlling body which licenses trainers and jockeys and also registers owners and horses in Singapore and Malaysia.  Approx$570

There is no restriction on foreigners owning horses in Singapore. All Singapore residents and non-residents can own racehorses in Singapore. You also need not be staying in Singapore to be registered as an owner. There is also no restriction on the number of racehorses an individual or group of individuals can own.

To be an owner in Singapore, a person must be above 21 years of age, is of good financial standing and is not a declared bankrupt. An applicant should also not have any criminal record at the time of application nor have been disqualified by any turf club. The MRA owner registration fee is S$570 and this fee is payable annually.

Registration Of Ownership

Registration of ownership can be done at the Malayan Racing Association (MRA), which governs the races conducted in Singapore and Malaysia. Its Singapore office is located at the Singapore Racecourse. An annual fee of S$570 is payable to the MRA for every owner registered under all types of ownership.

Australian Export Criteria For Racehorses Sold into Singapore/Malaysia

1. An unraced horse must:

       A. not be more than three years old at the time of arrival in Malaysia or Singapore.
       B. have been broken in.

2. A raced horse must:

1. not be more than five years old at the time of arrival in Malaysia or Singapore.
2. have won or placed second or third in a race at a race meeting that has Metropolitan Status pursuant to the Australian Rules of Racing (Amended 1/10/2007)
   
   or have won a race where the stake money is AUD 10,000 or more (Amended 1/10/2007). (Or Aus rated at 55+)
   or have won or been placed second, third or fourth in a Graded, Group or Listed race.

The Macau Jockey Club has races all year round. Racing Season normally starts in September and ends at the end of August in the following year. Basically, there are two race meetings per week, night meeting on Fridays and day meeting on weekends.

There is normally a programme of 72 race meetings, including 36 day races and 36 night races. Day races start at 2:00pm while night races begin at 7:15pm. During the summer season, races are programmed in the evening

PERMIT APPLICATION

Permits will be issued on a first-come, first-serve basis.

1.  
   1. All Applicants MUST be Members of the Macau Jockey Club.
   2. No Member shall be allowed to own (whether for his own account or in partnership with others) more than twenty (20) horses.
   3. Each application must be accompanied by a deposit of:
      1. HK$70,000 for horses from Australia, New Zealand
      2. HK$100,000 for horses from UK, USA and Canada
      3. HK$130,000 for horses from Argentina
   4. All incurred expenses including the cost of shipment, ground transport to the airport in the country of domicile, in Hong Kong and in Macau, a handling fee of HK$5500, quarantine charges and veterinary fees, insurance and airport taxes, after the horse has arrived at the appointed holding property, shall be deducted from the deposit. The remaining balance shall be refunded and any deficit shall be charged to the Applicant's Membership account.
   5. All expenses incurred prior to the horse's arrival at the holding property shall be for the direct account of the Applicant or his Agent.
   6. The Applicant undertakes to pay to the Macau Jockey Club all expenses incurred after the horse has arrived at the appointed holding property. Notwithstanding the fact that the horse may have been withdrawn from a particular shipment, or if the shipment is cancelled or delayed, the Applicant shall remain entirely responsible for all incurred expenses including those for the reserved airstable space onboard that shipment. In addition, the owner undertakes that the shipping of the horse and any additional expenses that may incur is at his/her own risk.
   7. Based on actual needs, the Club reserves the right to increase the amount of the required deposit.
   8. The name(s) of the permit holder(s) as appearing on the permit shall be deemed to be the registered owner(s) and no amendment, addition or transfer shall be permitted except as provided in the Ownership Bye-Laws.
   9. With regard to the nomination of a trainer, if a newly licensed trainer (2009-2010 Season) is being nominated, the horse so assigned shall not be transferred for a complete Season.
   10. l) The permit deposit is non-refundable. In the event that after being assigned a horse, the nominated trainer is no longer licenced by the Club, then a substitute trainer must be nominated.

Australian Export Criteria For Racehorses Sold into Macau

PPG ( UNRACED HORSES )

1.  
   1. Unraced 2 Year Olds

1.  
   1.  
      1. Southern Hemisphere PPG which turn 2 years of age on 1st August 2009 (foaling year 2007) will be permitted into Macau after 1st August 2009 and will be allocated a rating of 39 upon arrival. They will not be permitted to race prior to 1st January 2010. However, if they remain unraced by 1st September 2010 their rating will be amended to 45.
   2. Unraced 3 Year Olds
      1. Southern Hemisphere PPG which turn 3 years of age on 1st August 2009 (foaling year 2006) can be imported and will be allocated a rating of 45 upon arrival. However, if they remain unraced by 1st September 2010, their rating will be amended to 48.
   3. Unraced 4 Year Olds
      1. Southern Hemisphere PPG which will turn 4 years of age on 1st August 2009 (foaling year 2005) can be imported and will be allocated a rating of 48 upon arrival. However, these Griffins MUST arrive in Macau prior to 1st March 2011.

* Fillies and mares allowance of 3 points will apply to the above 3 categories.

QUALIFICATIONS

   1. The following horses may not be imported into Macau:

      1. Any unraced horses (PPG) older than 4 years of age.
      2. Horses which do not comply with the Veterinary Requirements as stated in Clause 7 below.
      3. All PP’s must not have had more than 15 starts before they arrive in Macau unless special permission is obtained from the Club’s Management Committee.
      4. Application may be made to import PPs which have only had a maximum of 3 starts without earning any prizemoney. If this application is successful, then these PPs will be awarded the same rating as PPGs according to age.
   2. Prize Money Requirements
      1. There is no requirement for horses to have been winners.
      2. Southern Hemisphere PP's which will be 3 years old on 1 August 2009 (foaling year 2006) must have earned minimum aggregate stakes in the respective country as follows:

HOW DO I BECOME A RACING MEMBER OF THE JOCKEY CLUB?

Application Forms for membership are issued to the 200 Voting Members of the Club, who have the right to propose and second candidates for membership.
Voting Members must know the candidate well and be satisfied that the candidate is a person of integrity before agreeing to propose and second the candidate.
To apply for membership, a candidate must have the endorsement of two Voting Members, and also have three Club Members who are prepared to support his/her application for Membership.. 

Australian Export Criteria For Racehorses Sold into Hong Kong

1. Horses must be sold into Hong Kong before they turn five years old.
2. The restrictions on the maximum number of starts for different age groups are detailed below:
     Maximum number of starts for 2-year-olds is 10 starts
     Maximum number of starts for 3-year-olds is 17 starts
     Maximum number of starts for 4-year-olds is 17 starts

3. Horses must have won a race at a Metropolitan track
Or won a race of an advertised value of at least $15,000
Or if they have not won a race have been placed 2nd or 3rd in a Group or Listed race.
Or of they have not won a race have been placed 2nd or 3rd in an advertised race of at least $50,000
